About
Tim Muys approaches his work with a practical, hands-on mindset, shaped by years of experience and a deep connection to the land. He focuses on getting the details right, solving problems as they arise, and maintaining high standards consistently.
Steady and dependable, Tim trusts knowledge, observation, and careful judgment over shortcuts or trends. His philosophy is simple: understand the conditions, make informed decisions, and follow through. It’s this consistency and attention to detail that has earned him the respect of colleagues, players, and the broader turfgrass community alike.
Career Path
Tim’s career in golf course operations spans more than two decades, beginning with early roles in course maintenance and progressing through leadership positions on both established and newly developed courses.
He played a key role in the grow-in and establishment of two golf courses, gaining hands-on experience in course construction, early-stage agronomy, and developing maintenance programs from the ground up.
Since 2006, he has served as Superintendent at Piper’s Heath Golf Club, overseeing all aspects of course operations and ensuring consistent performance and high-quality playing conditions.
Industry Leadership
Tim has contributed to the profession through leadership roles and active involvement in industry organizations.
He served as President of the Ontario Golf Course Superintendents’ Association and the IPM Council of Canada, promoting professional standards, education, and collaboration across the turfgrass industry.
Ryan Scott, Superintendent at Beverly Golf & Country Club, reflects on working with Tim:
“After getting to know Tim over the years on the OGSA board, I found him professional, accommodating, and sharp as a tack.”
Approach in Practice
Tim’s work reflects a balance between traditional agronomy and evolving, lower-input practices. He has been an early adopter of alternative methods, including the use of iron and reduced chemical inputs to support turf health.
In addition to his hands-on work, Tim shares his expertise with the broader turfgrass community. He was a panelist at the 2026 Ontario Turfgrass Symposium, contributing to the discussion “Real-World Experiences with Alternative Control Methods on the Golf Course”.
“Through his years, Tim has embraced the ‘KISS’ method in his agronomic management. Simplifying and adopting a more biological approach to turf management, he has been able to maintain his playing surfaces at a high level while dramatically reducing the use of synthetic fertilizers and chemicals. He doesn’t get caught up in marketing gimmicks, preferring his own research and practical solutions that produce excellent playing conditions.” – On Course Magazine, November 2021
Team Leadership
Tim oversees a large and diverse crew of more than 20 employees. He manages daily operations, sets clear expectations, and ensures accountability and consistency across the team. His leadership style emphasizes clear communication, practical guidance, and a focus on delivering excellent course conditions.
In addition, Tim coordinates a specialized program for foreign temporary workers, who fill critical seasonal roles when local labour is unavailable. He handles recruitment, compliance, visa applications, and housing logistics, ensuring these workers are integrated seamlessly into the crew. This complex, high-demand process requires careful planning and attention to detail, and Tim has built a system that consistently brings skilled seasonal labour to the course efficiently and reliably.
